LARC: Learn to Crew Row

During the school holiday, Rowing Adventures Ltd run the Learn to Crew Row programme for entry into Lymington Amateur Rowing Club’s Junior Squad.

This week, on Tuesday, I met AM, HMc EW and OB. We introduced each other (rowers, coaches and mentors), talked about the 3 day course and the flexibility needed to respond to the heat wave and wind conditions, then discussed the importance of the EPIPEN for one of our ‘allergic’ rowers. Then we got down to the nitty gritty…

Course content:

Tuesday:

  • Indoor Rowing- safety, basic technique

  • Single Sculling- in the stable Glide Solos in the safe lagoon (tow lines until basic manoeuvre competency shown)

  • Rafting fun

  • Swimming off the pontoon!

  • Washing and racking the single sculls

Wednesday

  • Indoor Rowing- pressure curve, stroke rate, stroke breakdown

  • Boat house tour- river v coastal

  • Coxes Quad session- synch, race starts

  • Supported safety boat driving

  • Swimming off the pontoon


Thursday

  • Crew boat knowledge- Quad v Four, derigging, re-rigging race, lifting technique

  • Indoor Rowing - split, basic warm ups and team relays

  • Single sculling- Wind and tide knowledge for manoeuvring, Buoy turns, standing starts, timed slalom course, stake boat starts and a capsize drill.

  • Swimming off the pontoon

  • Washing and racking the single sculls


All rowers exceeded the minimum skill level to pass this course and are prepped ready to join Lymington Rowing Club should they now wish. JLARC sessions are held during term time on Sunday am and Monday pm. During the summer holidays there is also a Wednesday evening (see Summer Sessions).

Next step options:

  1. Join LARC Junior squad (JLARC) now with £30 of the L2R course cost subsidising the membership fee. This will give access to the Summer Sessions available during the school holidays. Contact Kirsty for more info here.

  2. Attend a Passport to Explore taster session (1:1 @£40ph ) to prepare for Adventuring sessions with RA
